According to figures released by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), in 2003 public broadcasting stations raised over $2.3 billion to support their operations and award-winning programming. Support for public television came from a variety sources, with the most notable source of funding coming from the viewers public television stations serve. For each man, woman and child in America, the federal government provides $1.30 per year in federal funds to support public broadcasting. Federal support for public broadcasting comes in the form of direct appropriations to the CPB, and appropriations to other important programs, like the infrastructure grants through the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP). Federal funding also supports public television's educational services, as provided through the highly successful Ready To Learn and Ready To Teach programs. These federal funds are critical not only because local public television stations are directly supported by these funds, but also because local public stations have the ability to leverage the promised federal funds to raise state, local and private funds.
