Description: The Foundation provides grants in the areas of:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Civic and Community
  • Education
  • Health and Health Initiatives
  • Human Services
  • United Way
  • Youth and Youth-at-Risk

Grants are primarily made to organizations based in Birmingham, Alabama.

Sample grants:

  • $20,000 to Alabama Public Television for Discovering Alabama programming and other station needs (2007);
  • $4,420 to WBHM in underwriting support (2008); same amount in 2006 and 2007.

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation supports public media organizations in Alabama (primarily in Birmingham).

Eligibility: Applicants must have 501(c)(3) status and must be located within the Foundation's targeted area (mainly Birmingham). Requests can only be submitted once in a 12-month period, even if declined. Once a multi-year gift is completed, the grantee may not submit another proposal for consideration for at least two years. Applicants must have strong leadership with a committed, active board of directors and/or advisory board.

The Foundation generally does not fund:

  • K-12 schools.
  • Churches, public facilities or state organizations.
  • Start-up funding, new staff positions, feasibility studies, consultants.

Deadlines: February 19, May 21, August 20 and November 19

How to apply: Submit a full proposal, according to the guidelines. All proposals should be directed to Ms. Kate H. Cotton, Vice President, Community Relations, Protective Life Corporation and Executive Director, Protective Life Foundation at the above address.

Giving range: Most grants are below $10,000.
