Description: The Foundation was established in 1964 by William Stern, Sam Stern and Edward A. Stern (all deceased). It supports the arts, social welfare/human services, education, youth recreation, civic projects and health issues for the benefit of the greater Fargo-Moorhead area.

Sample grants:

  • $100,000 to Trollwood Performing Arts School, Fargo, ND for general operating support (2005).
  • $20,000 to Prairie Public Broadcasting, Fargo, ND for general operating support (2005).
  • $12,000 to Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Fargo, ND for general operating support (2005).
  • $10,000 to Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, Fargo, ND for educational concerts (2006).
  • $1,750 Minnesota Public Radio, Saint Paul, MN (2005).  

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation's gifts demonstrate its support of the arts, education and public media. The Foundation has made 18 grants for performing arts/radio/television projects over the past five years, totaling $298,250. 

Eligibility: Giving limited to the Moorhead, Minnesota and Fargo, North Dakota area. No grants to individuals, or for endowment funds; no loans. 

Deadline: March 31st for spring consideration and August 31st for fall consideration.

How to apply: Initial approach should be by letter or call requesting the application and guidelines.  

Giving range: The average gift for radio/television projects is approximately $16,500. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $125,000.

Assets: $7,636,293 (2008).

Total giving: $441,096 (2008).
