Types of grants: Project, technical assistance. Operating support grants are offered every other year.

Description: The Arts Council of New Orleans is a private, non-profit organization designated as the City's official arts agency. The Arts Council serves as one of eight regional distributing agencies for state arts funds.

The Arts Council of New Orleans provides funding to support arts and cultural activities in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes through the Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding Program. Community Arts Grants serve Orleans Parish only.

Community Arts Grants are made possible with funding from the City of New Orleans. Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding Program grants are made possible with state funding through the Louisiana Division of the Arts.

The Council issues periodic calls for art. It offers webinars of interest to artists and arts organizations. It also administers the Community Arts Awards. Past awards have gone to WWNO Radio, WWOZ and WYES-TV.

Sample grants:

  • $15,390 to Friends of WWOZ in an operating support grant (2009).
  • $7,000 to Friends of WWOZ (2009).
  • $3,300 to Musica da Camera to support concerts and to support lectures, publications, and weekly radio broadcasts on WWNO of Continuum, ono of the longest- running radio programs devoted to early music (2009).
  • $3,200 to New Orleans Video Access Center to support a program of education, workforce development, independent productions and community outreach that fosters the creation of film and video for a diverse public (2009).  

Fit for public broadcasting: The Arts Council has made numerous grants to public media in New Orleans.

Eligibility: Grants are available to organizations with 501(c)(3) status as well as to organizations using a fiscal agent; also to local, parish or state governmental entities; to schools and to individuals using a 501(c)(3) fiscal agent.

How to apply: The Council requires both an online submission and a hard copy submission of proposals. The online proposal system can be accessed here. Free grant workshops and consultations with staff are offered and are strongly recommended for guidance on preparing a competitive application. It is acceptable to call the grants staff with questions or to discuss funding opportunities or an application.

Giving range: Up to approximately $55,000. Most grants are below $10,000.

Assets: The Arts Council is funded by the City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Division of the Arts.

Total giving: Approximately $820,000 through the Decentralized Arts Funding Program and approximately $275,000 through the Community Arts Grants Program awarded in 2009.
