Description: The Foundation was created by Juliette Atherton, daughter of missionaries to Hawaii and widow of industrialist Joseph B. Atherton. The Foundation is now one of the largest endowed private grantmakers in Hawaii. The Foundation supports organizations working in the areas of arts/culture, human services, education, environment, community development, health, religion/spiritual development and youth services. Education and human services are its two largest giving areas.

Sample grants:

  • $45,000 to Hawaii Public Television Foundation for the Avid Symphony Nitris Editing System (capital grant, 2008).
  • $10,000 to Pacific Islanders in Communications for Hawaiian language television broadcast (2007).
  • $10,000 to Hawaii International Film Festival (capital grant, 2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: This is a good fit for public broadcasters serving Hawaii for capital and project expenses.

Eligibility: Applicants must have 501(c)(3) status. No grants are made to:

  • Endowments or operating funds.
  • The University of Hawaii, other than an annual grant.
  • Conferences, festivals or other one-time events.
  • Activities that have already occurred.
  • Individuals, except through its scholarship program.
  • Lobbying.
  • Loans or regranting.

The Foundation will not serve as the sole funder of an organization.

Deadline: Application deadlines are the first business day in February, April, August, October and December.

How to apply: Complete the grant application cover sheet (click Grant Seekers), attach a proposal narrative (no more than 5 pages) and required attachments, and submit by U.S. mail to the address above. The term of a grant is usually one year. The Foundation generally will not fund an organization for more than three consecutive years.
