THE BIG READ

The Big Read

Grant: The Big Read
Agency: National Endowment for the Arts; managed by the Arts Midwest Foundation
Deadline: The deadline was February 5, 2013.

Description: The Big Read is a program designed by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and managed by the Arts Midwest Foundation, to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. Grantees will use the funds awarded, along with comprehensive resources provided, to support activities that include reading and discussing a single book or the work of a poet. Additional resources such as access to online training resources and opportunities, as well as educational and promotional materials will be available to support widespread community involvement.

The Big Read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. These programs include activities such as author readings, book discussions, art exhibits, lectures, film series, music or dance events, theatrical performances, panel discussions, and other events and activities related to the community’s chosen book or poet. A full listing of the eligible 30 books and poets, on which applicants may focus their efforts, can be found in the program notice.

Partnerships are a critical component of this program. In addition to partnering with local libraries, eligible applicants are encouraged to collaborate with other community organizations and educational groups.

Fit for Public Broadcasting: Stations are eligible to apply directly to this program, or as partners with their local library. Stations with an interest in education and curriculum development, and have a history of hosting community engagement activities are encouraged to participate. Grantees are expected to promote their local Big Read programming and to generate media involvement with local television, radio, print and social media outlets as a way to ensure strong community participation. As a key community organization, public broadcasting stations can help generate greater community involvement and engagement.

In 2012, two public broadcasting stations were among the 78 recipients of a Big Read grant:

  • New York Public Radio received a $15,000 grant to support community activities surrounding the book “Their Eyes Were Watching God”.
  • KRCB received a $16,000 grant to support community activities surrounding the American Poet Emily Dickinson.

Eligibility: Any nonprofit organization; state, local or tribal government; or tax-exempt public library is eligible to apply. A partnership with a library is required. All eligible applicants must choose from the 30 available reading choices provided in the program notice to be considered.

Anticipated Funding: Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Each grant must be matched 1:1 with nonfederal funds.

How to Apply: Applications must be submitted electronically through the eGrant system. Online submission requires registration, which can be a lengthy process. Be sure to visit the eGrants system and begin registering well in advance of the grant deadline.
