Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges
Grant: Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities
Division: Division of Education Programs
Deadline: August 27, 2013
Description: The Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges grants are intended to strengthen and enrich humanities education and scholarship at community colleges or community college systems. These projects must be planned and implemented in collaboration with another institution with appropriate resources, such as a college or university, museum, research library or professional association. Grants may be used to enhance the humanities content of existing programs, develop new programs or lay the foundation for more extensive endeavors in the future. These grants are expected to
- Create opportunities for community college faculty members to study together while improving their capacity to teach the humanities.
- Enhance or develop areas of need in an institution’s humanities programs.
- Give community college faculty access to humanities resources through partnerships with other institutions with appropriate resources.
All projects must address the Bridging Cultures theme. This agency-wide initiative encourages exploration of the ways in which cultures from around the globe, as well as the subcultures within America’s borders, have influenced American society. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that enhance the understanding of diverse countries, peoples, and cultural and intellectual traditions worldwide.
Additionally all projects must engage participating faculty in shared readings of important humanities texts, involve humanities scholars with appropriate expertise, improve the quality of humanities course offering at the community college or community college system, and widely disseminate their results.
Fit for Public Broadcasting: Stations are not eligible to apply directly to this program, but may find a natural fit as a partnering institution. Applications should reflect a collaborative relationship between a community college and another institution with appropriate resources in the planning and implementation of the project. Public broadcasting stations, with rich humanities resources, can fill this role. Public media content would not only enhance a community college’s humanities programs, but would give faculty access to humanities content to be incorporated into their teaching. Stations are encouraged to begin conversations with their local community college on potential partnership opportunities.
Eligibility: Any nonprofit organization, state and local governmental agency, and federally recognized Indian tribal government are eligible to apply. The planning and implementation phases must involve a partnership between a community college or community college system and another institution with appropriate resources. The community college must serve as the primary applicant.
Anticipated Funding: NEH anticipates making seven to nine grants of up to $120,000 each. The project period may run between 18 and 36 months, with projects beginning no later than September 1, 2014.
How to Apply: Applicants are encouraged to contact a program officer for advice about preparing the proposal and to review proposal drafts. Any draft materials submitted for review must be sent by email at least five weeks before the grant deadline.
Final applications must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov. Online submission requires registration, a process that usually takes three to five business days but can take as long as four weeks. Be sure to visit Grants.gov and begin registering well in advance of the grant deadline.
