Types of grants: Capital, land acquisition, matching/challenge support.

Description: The Champlin Foundations are made up of the Champlin Foundation Trust, the Second Champlin Foundation Trust and the Third Champlin Foundation. The funds of the Champlin Foundation Trust and the Second Champlin Foundation Trust are administered by the same distribution committee. The first Trust was established in 1932 by George S. Champlin, Florence C. Hamilton and Hope C. Neaves, who also created The Second Champlin Foundation in 1947. The Third Champlin Foundation was established by George S. Champlin in 1975. All three Foundations share the same management and PNC Bank/Delaware is the trustee of each. Giving primarily for conservation; education and libraries; health and hospitals; cultural activities, including historic preservation; and social and family services.

Sample grants:

  • $280,000 to Providence Public Library, Providence, RI for building/renovation; equipment; computer systems/equipment; film/video/radio (2008).
  • $67,000 to Rhode Island Public Radio, WRNI Public Radio, Providence, RI for equipment for IBOC digital signal and for new directional antenna (2007).
  • $33,000 to INSIGHT, Warwick, RI to purchase and install radio equipment that will modernize IN-SIGHT Radio (2006).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundations have supported public media in the past. The Foundation has made four grants for radio/television projects over the past four years, totaling $380,800. 

Eligibility: Giving is primarily limited to Rhode Island. No support for churches (with few exceptions) or generally for daycare centers, housing, mental health counseling centers or senior centers. No grants to individuals or for program or operating expenses, administrative facilities, equipment, books, films, videos or plays. No multi-year grants.

Deadline: Submit all requests between March 1 and April 30. 

How to apply: The initial approach should be by letter of inquiry, accompanied by the organization's 501(c)(3) letter. Application form not required.

Giving range: The average gift for radio/television projects is approximately $95,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $2.5 million.
