Description: Incorporated in 1974, the Coastal Community Foundation fosters philanthropy for the lasting good of the community, giving primarily for education and human services. Approximately 20 percent of the Foundation's giving is through discretionary grants, supporting the arts, conservation, disadvantaged youth and other areas. The Foundation operates several discretionary funds, most of which make grants below $10,000.

Sample grants:

  • $119,018 to Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Charleston, SC for continuing support (2009).
  • $30,000 to Charleston Stage Company, Charleston, SC for general operating support (2009).
  • $13,275 Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC for Jonathan Green Week (2008).
  • $10,000 to Sundance Institute, Beverly Hills, CA for general operating support (2008).
  • $1,000 to WNYC Radio, New York, NY for general operating support (2009).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation appears committed to funding the arts, but its known high gift for public media is fairly small. The Foundation has made 100 grants for media/arts projects over the past two years, totaling more than $1 million.

Eligibility: Giving in eight coastal counties of SC: Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton and Jasper. No support for religious activities or private foundations. No grants to individuals (except for designated scholarship funds), or for endowments, deficit financing, one-time events or generally for building funds.

Deadline(s): Deadlines vary by fund.

How to apply: The Foundation's Grants Committee assesses all Open Grants Letters of Intent and then recommends that a full proposal be submitted, that a full proposal be submitted with suggested changes, or that the applicant not submit a proposal because the request is not likely to be funded. Faxed or e-mailed Letters of Intent are not accepted. Application form required.

Giving range: The average gift for arts/media projects is approximately $10,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $3 million.

Assets: $138,022,941 (2008)

Total giving: $11,542,974 (2008)
