Description: H. Halsey Davis was President and Chairman of Shaw's Supermarkets, Inc. After his retirement, he and his wife Phyllis created the Foundation. The Foundation supports:

  • Education, mainly providing support to colleges and universities. The Foundation does not support K-12 education.
  • Medical, providing support to hospitals, clinics and medical research organizations.
  • Culture/Arts, providing support to organizations whose primary activity is to promote music, theater, drama, history, literature and other arts.

Sample grants:

  • $27,025 to Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation for Conversations with Maine (2007).
  • $10,000 to Maine Media Workshops (2008).
  • $5,000 to the Community Television Network for Bridging the Digital Divide (2007).
  • $4,000 to WMPG-FM for the Malaga Island Radio and Photo Documentary Project (2006).

Fit for public broadcasting: This Foundation has a history of supporting public media serving Maine. The best fit is likely for projects focused on culture/arts or on public issues.

Eligibility: Organizations must have 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) or (2) status. The organization must be located in New England (most support goes to Maine organizations, with priority going to organizations in southern Maine).

The Foundation does not make grants to individuals, religious programs or fellowships. The Foundation does not normally provide support for annual giving campaigns or general operating needs. Grants to endowment campaigns have a low priority. Grants are typically made for one year only. Organizations that receive a grant are discouraged from applying again for 24 months.

Deadline: There are four deadlines per year, in February, May, August and November.

How to apply: Applicants should confirm their eligibility and download an application. The Foundation does not use a letter of inquiry process; applicants should submit a complete proposal. However, Foundation staff will respond to questions.

Giving range: Up to $60,000. Most grants are $25,000 or below.

Assets: $46,031,311 (2008)
