Description: The Foundation was established in 1960. The Foundation seeks to enrich the quality of life in the Clay County, Minnesota and Cass County, North Dakota area. The Foundation makes grants in the areas of:

  • Arts and Culture.
  • Community Betterment (civil rights, social action, advocacy, community improvement, capacity building, philanthropy and volunteerism).
  • Education.
  • Environment and Animals.
  • Health.
  • Human Rights.
  • Human Services (public protection, employment, food, nutrition, agriculture, housing, shelter, public safety, disaster preparedness, recreation, leisure, sports, athletics and youth development).
  • Youth Recreation. 

The Foundation prefers projects that affect the community broadly, involve collaboration and leverage support from other sources.

Sample grants:

  • $100,000 to Fargo Theater Management Corporation, Fargo, ND for general support (2007).
  • $90,000 Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, Fargo, ND for general operations (2007).
  • $50,000 to Pontoppidan Lutheran, Fargo, ND for new sound system and support for Radio Ministry (2007).
  • $25,000 to Trollwood Performing Arts School, Fargo, ND for capital campaign (2006).
  • $10,000 to Prairie Public Broadcasting, Fargo, ND for High Risk High: Youth Drinking (2009).
  • $5,000 to Prairie Public Broadcasting, Fargo, ND to sponsor television programming of general interest (2007).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation appears to support public media in the areas of arts, social issues and general community betterment. The Foundation's giving for public media is smaller than its giving for the arts. The Foundation has made 23 grants for performing arts/radio/television projects over the past four years, totaling $499,630.  

Eligibility: Giving limited to organizations located in or directly serving Clay County, MN, and Cass County, ND. No grants to individuals or for operating expenses (except for limited experimental or start-up periods), annual appeals or membership drives, or organizations which have outstanding reports from previous Fargo-Moorhead Foundation grants.

Giving range: The average gift for radio/television projects is approximately $21,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $1 million.
