Description: Klein Gilhousen is a co-founder of QUALCOMM, Inc., where he oversees Systems Engineering for all of QUALCOMM's programs. He invented a novel approach to increase the capacity of spread-spectrum code division multiple access (CDMA) techniques for application to both cellular telephone and mobile satellite communications. Mr. Gilhousen is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Society for Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).

The Foundation focuses its support on organizations in Gallatin County, Montana. It also makes grants to pre-selected organizations outside of Gallatin County. The Foundation makes grants in the areas of: community-building (including public media), children's services, human services, Christian outreach, arts, health care, education and environment. 

Sample grants:

  • $200,000 to Christian Media Ministries (2008).
  • $60,000 to Montana Mental Health Association toward construction of a new facility (2008).
  • $7,000 to Friends of Montana Public Broadcasting for the 11th & Grant series (2008).
  • $3,000 to Yellowstone Public Radio in general support (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation is a fit for public media located in and/or serving the people of Gallatin County, Montana.

Eligibility: The Foundation accepts applications from non-profit organizations in Gallatin County, Montana. Outside Montana, the Foundation only gives to pre-selected organizations.

Deadline: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31

How to apply: Send a one-page letter describing the background of the proposed project or ongoing need, how the project will impact the community, what is requested, why it is needed and the timeline for which funds are requested. Send as attachments all of the following:

  • 501(c)(3) tax determination letter or, if not available, organization's tax ID number (this is required from first-time applicants only).
  • Board list, including name, occupation and address.
  • Audited financial statement (required if the organization's annual budget is $250,000+).
  • Financial statements or, minimally, a copy of the organization's budget.
  • Information on other funding sources (received, pending or in process).
  • Other attachments as appropriate, not to exceed 10 pages.

Requests may be submitted via e-mail or regular U.S. mail. Certified mail is not acceptable.

Giving range: Up to $150,000. Many grants are much lower, but there are several in the $20,000 – 60,000 range.
