Type of foundation: Community

Types of grants: Capacity-building, program, scholarship.

Description: The Hawaii Community Foundation distributes charitable funds to Hawaii's nonprofit organizations through a variety of programs. The Foundation runs an Organizational Capacity-Building program that includes multiple grant opportunities for different stages of the capacity-building process (e.g., planning, implementation, executive transitions, strategic partnerships). More information on capacity-building grants is available online. Capacity-building implementation grants have supported such projects as integrating evaluation into a learning organization, utilizing online fundraising, increasing marketing and public relations, implementing an improved computer server system, hiring a major giving/planned giving consultant, etc.

The Foundation administers grantmaking for several private foundations (list available online). In addition, the Foundation administers a number of smaller funds focused on supporting specific fields of interest, including community capacity-building, leadership development, health, environment, etc. Among these are, for example:

  • The Pikake Fund (field of interest: environment), which makes small grants for film/video projects addressing Hawaii's environment. Grants are made only in even years.
  • Hawaii Children's Trust Fund (field of interest: human services), which makes grants to increase awareness of activities and strategies that prevent child abuse and strengthen families.
  • Annie Sinclair Knudsen Fund (field of interest: geographic-specific funds), which supports projects that benefit the people, flora and fauna of Kauai.

A full list of funds by Field of Interest is available online. All of the competitive grant programs have their own funding priorities and proposal requirements.
