Description: HCA is a corporate operator of hospitals and health systems in several parts of the country. The HCA Foundation is its philanthropic arm. Established in 1992, the Foundation makes grants to support:
- Arts: The Foundation supports programs designed to provide community outreach and to serve children and adults in the community.
- Childhood and Youth Development: The Foundation supports programs designed to encourage the positive growth and development of children and youth and to promote success in school, skill-building, character development, responsibility, service and leadership.
- Health and Well-Being: Health is the Foundation's highest priority. The Foundation supports programs designed to promote health and well-being; provide basic needs such as health care, housing, and food; and promote higher levels of mental and physical well-being.
- Innovation Technology Grants: The Foundation, in partnership with Microsoft and HCA, awards grants to programs designed to promote innovation through the use of state-of-the-art software. Special emphasis is directed toward programs designed to address health, youth and children and workforce development.
Sample grants:
- $500,000 to Nashville Public Television, Nashville, TN for capital support (2007).
- $25,000 to Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, Nashville, TN for production of 'Cancer in the Workplace' DVD (2004).
- $20,000 to Rape and Sexual Abuse Center of Davidson County, Nashville, TN to expand 'Safe at Last' with production of videos and student materials (2003).
- $15,000 to Youth Villages, Memphis, TN for media campaign to recruit adoptive families (2005).
- $10,200 to You Have the Power Know How to Use It, Nashville, TN for filming and editing of video on domestic violence (2006).
Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has made 13 grants for media projects over the past seven years, totaling $767,700.
Eligibility: Giving primarily in Middle Tennessee. No support for political organizations, individual churches or schools or organizations established less than three years ago. No support for civic or international affairs organizations. No grants to individuals or for advertising or sponsorships or social events or similar fundraising activities.

How to apply: New applicants are asked to send a letter of inquiry (up to two pages) to the Foundation at the address below describing the proposed project, its goals and objectives and the approximate level of funding required. The Foundation will invite a full proposal, if interested. Because the Foundation focuses its giving in Middle Tennessee, all requests outside of the Nashville area should be submitted to the closest HCA facility location or division office. Unsolicited capital requests are not accepted. The Board will review proposals at its quarterly meetings (February, May, August, November). Preference is given to organizations where an HCA employee volunteers or serves on the Board.
Giving range: The average gift for arts/media projects is approximately $60,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $23.3 million.
