Description: Established in 1969, the Foundation supports organizations involved with arts and culture, health, employment, financial education, human services and diversity. Special emphasis is directed toward programs designed to promote economic self- sufficiency. The Foundation has identified the following program areas:

  • Diversity: The Foundation supports programs designed to foster an inclusive environment in which individuals of diverse backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to realize their full potential.
  • Financial Education: The Foundation supports programs designed to increase the understanding and effective use of financial services, thus creating better and more productive lifestyles.
  • Workforce Development and Economic Self-Sufficiency: The Foundation supports programs and training that help individuals achieve a comfortable standard of living and begin to build a secure future.

Sample grants:

  • $42,000 to ideastream, Cleveland, OH for continued general support for media, radio and television (2007).
  • $35,000 to Colorado Public Television, Denver, CO for continued general support for media and television (2006).
  • $25,000 to Public Broadcasting Council of Central New York, Syracuse, NY for continued general support for media, radio and television (2006).
  • $20,000 to Saint Lawrence Valley Educational Television Council, Watertown, NY for capital campaign for media and television (2005).
  • $10,000 to KBTC Association, Tacoma, WA for organization support for media and television (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has made gifts to public media in multiple states, supporting local broadcast outlets in their communities. Public media appears to be a good fit for the Foundation's interest in arts, civic/human rights and community development. The Foundation has made 17 grants for radio/television projects over the past seven years, totaling $213,250.

Eligibility: Giving primarily in areas of company operations in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington. No support for lobbying or political organizations, veterans' or fraternal organizations, discriminatory organizations, professional organizations or athletic teams. No grants to individuals.

Giving range: The average gift for radio projects is approximately $12,500. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $1.3 million.
