A New Award Recognizes Exceptional Afterschool Programs on Arts and the Humanities
November 29, 2012
The Institute of Museum and Library Services has recently announced a call for applications for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. This award is granted by a partnership between the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Formerly known as the Coming Up Taller Award, the Youth Program Award will grant awards of $10,000 to 12 lucky afterschool programs, who have the option of accepting the award at the White House from First Lady Michelle Obama, Chairman of the President’s Committee. Those selected are chosen among a pool of outstanding afterschool and out-of-school programs. Winning programs exemplify how arts and humanities programs outside the regular school day enrich the lives of young people by teaching new skills, nurturing creativity and building self-confidence. Carefully focused projects supplement the in-school curricula which provide exposure to artistic and scholastic pursuits.
The Grant Center encourages public broadcasting stations to apply. Those of you active in the American Graduate initiative have wonderful projects to showcase. In 2012, Youth Radio was among the 12 recipients out of a total of 350 nominations. You can read more about Youth Radio's story, here.
A full list of eligibility requirements is found on the Youth Program Award website, but includes those nonprofit organization sponsored afterschool programs, which incorporate disciplines of the arts or the humanities.
All completed applications must be submitted online no later than February 4, 2013, 5:00 p.m. EST. Questions should be directed to info@nahyp.org or 202-682-5571.
