Description: The Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life in New Hampshire. It makes grants primarily to fund programs and to strengthen the capacity of existing charitable organizations, with emphasis on programs rather than capital needs. The Foundation makes the following kinds of grants:

  • Community Impact Grants: These grants are available for programmatic support, capacity-building and operating support. Applicants are typically notified of grant decisions within 12-14 weeks.
  • Express Grants: Express grants of up to $5,000 are available for project support and capacity-building on an expedited basis. Applicants will typically be notified of express grant decisions within six weeks.

Sample grants:

  • $225,000 to New Hampshire Public Radio, Concord, NH in general support for media and radio (2007).
  • $72,500 to World Media Foundation, Somerville, MA to broadcast Living on Earth radio program (2003).
  • $51,882 to New Hampshire Bar Foundation, Concord, NH for prisoners at New Hampshire State Prison to provide a means of telling story relating to the crime for which they are imprisoned or charged, through newspapers, periodicals, radio, television or other methods (2008).
  • $15,000 to Moultonborough School District SAU No. 45, NH to create interactive, educational, broadcast quality video about New Hampshire geology (2003).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation's gifts for media appear to support its interest in arts and education and its interest in civic leadership. The Foundation has made 100 grants for radio/television projects over the past five years, totaling more than $1.6 million.

Eligibility: Giving in the Lakes, Manchester, Monadnock, Nashua, North Country, Piscataqua, and Upper Valley regions in NH. The Foundation also makes some grants in bordering communities in Vermont and Maine. No support for sectarian or religious purposes. No grants to individuals (except for student aid and special awards). Generally no grants for building funds, endowments, deficit financing, capital campaigns for acquisition of land or renovations to facilities, purchase of major equipment, academic research, travel, or to replace public funding.

How to apply: The Grants Application Guidebook provides complete information on how to apply and what to submit. Application forms are required. It is fine to contact the Foundation to discuss a project with a program officer in advance of submitting an application. The Board meets nearly every month.

Giving range: The average gift for radio projects is approximately $16,500. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $2 million.
