Description: James M. Cox was the Democratic nominee for President in 1920. He founded Cox Enterprises, a leading communications, media and automotive services company. Headquartered in Atlanta, Cox Enterprises' revenues are nearly $15 billion, and the company has more than 50,000 employees.

The James M. Cox Foundation provides funding for capital campaigns and special projects in communities where Cox Enterprises does business. The Foundation is concentrating its community support in several priority areas:

  • Conservation and Environment.
  • Early Childhood Education.
  • Empowering Families and Individuals for Success.
  • Health.

The Foundation endowed a Chair at the University of Florida in New Media Journalism to support teaching, research and experimentation in new media journalism.

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation would be a possible fit for public media projects that focus on training diverse journalists, or incorporating diverse talent and new voices. The Foundation has interests in education, including early education, literacy and apparently dropout prevention. It might be a fit for stations working in these areas, as well.

Eligibility: Applicants must be located in areas where Cox Enterprises does business. Applicants outside of Atlanta, Georgia must submit a letter of support from the local Cox Enterprises business manager. The Foundation supports capital campaigns and special projects that local managers consider important to their community. The Foundation’s guidelines specify that it does not fund events or sponsorships, basic operating expenses (including salaries or other administrative costs), endowments, conferences or seminars. It does not provide in-kind gifts or seed money, nor does it make grants to individuals (including scholarships) or provide loans.

Deadlines: March 15, July 1, November 1.

The Foundation may require additional information, an interview or a site visit. First-time users must create an account and complete an eligibility quiz in order to begin the application process.

Giving range: $5,000 – $600,000.
