Description: The Foundation was established by the late Samuel Irving Newhouse, founder of Advance Publications, which owns Conde Nast Publications. It supports health and human services, arts/culture and education, primarily in New York state. It also funds journalism programs (journalist associations, journalism education, journalist training) nationally.

The Foundation has provided major support ($30M+) to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

  • $80,000 to Committee to Protect Journalists (2008).
  • $60,000 to American Press Institute (2008).
  • $30,000 to Robert Maynard Center for Journalist Education, University of California, Berkeley (2008).
  • $25,000 to Asian American Journalists Association (2008).
  • $25,000 to Native American Journalists Association (2008).
  • $20,000 to National Association of Black Journalists (2008).
  • $15,000 to Educational Broadcasting Corporation (2008).
  • $10,000 to Investigative Reporters and Editors, University of Missouri (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation is a good fit for public media organizations in New York state, as well as for training initiatives and/or projects to engage more diverse journalists. Projects that develop or implement new models of journalism might be of interest.

Eligibility: Most Foundation giving is focused on New York state, but the Foundation does support journalism organizations nationally.
