Description: The Foundation makes competitive grants through numerous funds. The funds vary in focus, ranging from field of interest funds to area funds that support the quality of life in a specific region (e.g., the Fund for Columbia County or the Quailwood Fund, serving residents of the Red Rock area).

The Foundation's primary interest areas include environmental protection, social services, education and youth development.

Sample grants:

  • $12,000 to WAMC/Albany, NY for general support, an annual gift and the Berkshires News Bureau (2008).
  • $5,750 to WMHT Educational Telecommunications in general support (2008).
  • $2,100 to Northern Berkshire Community Television through the William J. and Margery S. Barrett Fund for Adams, Cheshire and Savoy, MA for a stipend for teachers assisting in developing a comprehensive education plan (2007).
  • $1,900 to Northern Berkshire Community Television through the James and Robert Hardman Fund for North Adams, MA for a teacher advisory council to help develop a three-year comprehensive educational plan for local schools (2007).

Fit for public broadcasting: This Foundation is a fit for public media organizations that serve people in the priority geographic areas. The Foundation's competitive area funds are typically open to any non-profit organization working to improve the quality of life for residents of the designated areas. Eligibility: The Foundation supports organizations that serve communities in Berkshire County, MA; Columbia and northeast Dutchess County, NY; and northwest Litchfield County, CT. Donor-advised funds may support projects elsewhere.

Deadline: The various competitive grant programs have different deadlines.
