Description: NOAA provides $7,500,000 to improve public understanding, and stewardship of the local and global environment. NOAA is specifically interested in projects that use emerging and/or advanced technologies such as interactive websites that enable information sharing and collaboration to accomplish the following goals:
1. Facilitate outdoor experiences involving scientific inquiry and exploration of the natural world apart from formal K-12 curricula; and
2. Visualize, display, and interpret data to improve understanding and provide a systems perspective of Earth's dynamic processes.
There are two types of projects eligible for this grant:
Priority 1
These are large projects that occur over a longer duration with regional to national implementation.
Priority 2
These are smaller projects that occur over shorter duration with local to regional implementation.
Fit for public broadcasting: Successful projects help explain scientific research to a public audience. Project examples include web-based communities, social-networking sites, and blogs. Also of interest are projects that employ innovative use of hand-held devices for educational purposes, such as GPS or custom applications for mobile devices, as well as projects incorporating live video and data feeds using telepresence technology. The use of cutting-edge technology for data visualization, such as advanced/high performance computing, GIS, and advanced and/or innovative display systems, such as spherical display systems, is also encouraged. Projects involving cyberlearning, teaching and learning interactions conducted through the use of these and other technologies, are appropriate for this announcement.
Eligibility: Nonprofits, K-12 schools, science centers and museums, and institutions of higher education.
Anticipated funding: Approximately $7,500,000 will be distributed across 5-10 awards.
