Description: The Foundation was established by Henry A. Wallace, founder of the first commercial hybrid seed company, the Pioneer Hi-Bred Corn Company. The Foundation supports organizations and projects in the areas of: 

  • Sustainable agriculture.
  • Protection of farmland near cities.
  • Plant genetic research.
  • Biodiversity protection.
  • Environmental education and media.

Sample grants:

  • $120,000 to Environmental Film Festival (Washington, DC) to support the 2009 festival (2008).
  • $88,000 to WAMU to support environmental reporting (2008).
  • $75,000 to ETV Endowment of South Carolina to support a documentary on Plan B 3.0, Mobilizing to Save Civilization (2008).
  • $75,000 to ETV Endowment of South Carolina to support a documentary on Chesapeake Bay and Puget Sound (2008).
  • $50,000 to National Public Radio to support coverage of environmental issues (2008).
  • $47,500 to KRCB (Rohnert Park, CA) to support Natural Heroes (2008).
  • $40,000 to WGBH to support FRONTLINE documentary entitled Heat (2008).
  • $35,000 to the Society of Environmental Journalists (2008).
  • $30,000 to LinkMedia to support Earth Focus (2008).
  • $25,000 to WETA TV & FM to support environmental programming (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: There is an excellent fit for public media projects (especially with national reach) that focus on environmental issues.

Eligibility: The Foundation will not fund:

  • Grants to individuals.
  • Scholarships.
  • Endowments.
  • Multi-year commitments.

Deadline: None, but proposals received after November 1 may not be reviewed until January of the following year.

How to apply: By letter of inquiry or full proposal. See the full proposal requirements. All letters of inquiry and proposals should be submitted in hard copy. Faxed or e-mailed letters of inquiry or proposals will not be accepted.

Giving range: Typically, $25,000 - $40,000.
