Type of foundation: Company-sponsored

Types of grants: Project, matching/challenge, general operating, employee matching gifts.

Description: Goodrich Foundation is the charitable arm of Goodrich Corporation. The Foundation was formed in 1988 through a contribution by Goodrich Corporation. It provides support to selected national groups, charitable organizations and educational institutions that have the potential for widespread impact in Goodrich’s U.S. headquarters and plant communities.

The Foundation primarily makes grants to national organizations or to organizations that have potential for broad impact. However, the company’s local business units provide support to organizations in their communities; check the online locations guide for a full list of Goodrich facilities. The company places some emphasis on grantmaking in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Foundation changed its focus in 2010 to the following categories:

  • Honoring Those Who Serve: Goodrich and the Foundation support projects that give back to members of the military, to veterans and to their families.
  • STEM Education: Goodrich and the Foundation support projects that promote interest and skills in science, math and technology in K-12 and higher education. The Foundation also supports professional development for teachers in these subjects. Goodrich and the Foundation will consider supporting programs that promote adult education and welfare-to-work training and education related to aviation and aerospace. These programs may be supported through community colleges or civic, community and human services organizations.
  • Engaging our Workforce in the Community: The Foundation will consider proposals to nonprofit organizations in which a Goodrich employee has a formal leadership role, and the company has a matching gift program. Goodrich and the Foundation also support disaster relief.

The Foundation has backed away from its prior focus on arts giving.

Fit for public broadcasting: While only minimal past giving to media was found, there may well be opportunities at either the national or the local level for support, especially in the areas of STEM learning, workforce education or veterans support – all areas where stations are active.

Eligibility: Charitable contributions are made only to organizations defined as "tax exempt" under Section 501(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service. The Goodrich Foundation generally will not support:

  • Multi-year grants.
  • Travel funds for tours, exhibitions or trips by individuals or special interest groups.
  • Local athletic or sports programs or equipment, courtesy advertising benefits, raffle tickets and other fundraising events involving purchasing of tables, tickets or advertisements.
  • Organizations that receive sizable portions of their support through municipal, county, state or federal dollars.
  • Endowments.
  • K-12 schools.
  • Organizations based outside of the U.S.
  • Grants to groups with unusually high fundraising or administrative expenses.
  • Courtesy advertising benefits, raffle tickets or other fundraising events involving purchasing of tables, tickets or advertisements.

Deadline: The Goodrich Foundation staff review grant requests quarterly. Deadlines for Foundation proposals are March 1 and August 1. Decisions are made by the members of the Goodrich Foundation Board of Trustees. Local business units may have different deadlines and timelines.

How to apply: Goodrich Foundation applications are online only. For local support through a Goodrich business unit, contact the facility directly. For either the Foundation or the local business unit, it helps to have a Goodrich employee sponsor the request, though it is not required.

Giving range: While a few grants are larger, the typical range is up to $50,000. The majority of grants are below $10,000.

Assets: $8,636,811 (year ended 12/31/2010).

Total giving: $1,558,105 (year ended 12/31/2010).
