Description: The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Humana, Inc., a health insurance company. The Foundation supports organizations that promote healthy lives and communities. It makes grants to organizations in specific locations nationwide. In Kentucky, grants are made to organizations working in Louisville. Both the company and the Foundation are headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Foundation's primary focus areas are:
- Childhood health and education - projects or initiatives that seek to improve the health and academic achievement of children through the educational landscape.
- Family wellness and active lifestyles – projects or initiatives that strengthen the health of families through physical, social, mental, emotional or environmental support.
- Health literacy for diverse populations and seniors – projects or initiatives dedicated to improving people's ability to access, understand and use health information, especially low income populations and seniors.
Most grants are for one-year projects or for annual support. On occasion, the Foundation makes multi-year capital grants.
Through its Humana Communities Benefit giving program, the Foundation annually makes one-time grants of $100,000 to an organization in each of its eligible locations. These are capacity-building grants. Applicants do not need to be health-focused organizations so long as they propose programs or projects that fit into the Foundation's priority areas.
Sample grants:
- $50,000 to the Kentucky Author Forum for the author interview series (2007).
- $25,000 to the International Women's Media Foundation (2008).
- $25,000 to Kentucky Educational Television in endowment support (2007).
Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has a history of support for public media. Media organizations doing work in the area of health could apply for regular grants or for a Communities Benefit grant.
Eligibility: Organizations with 501(c)(3) status that work in the areas of childhood health and education, health literacy, and active lifestyles and wellness are eligible. The Foundation supports organizations in specified locations nationwide. Organizations that have received a past grant from the Communities Benefit program may not apply again.

- Individuals or private foundations.
