Types of grants: Program; low priority given to capital.

Description: The Foundation supports character-building education, programs that enhance family life, key social issues, science, programs that aim for community betterment, health and life skills, sports, fitness and activities that recognize the value of people.

Grants are overwhelmingly made to organizations in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Sample grants:

  • $11,250 to Iowa Public Television (2009).
  • $10,000 to Boys and Girls Club, Waterloo (2009).
  • $10,000 to Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony (2009).

Fit for public broadcasting: There is a fit for public media as a community institution.

Eligibility: Applicants must have 501(c)(3) status.

Generally, the Foundation does not support:

  • Individuals.
  • Business ventures.
  • Organizations without IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
  • Organizations that limit membership and services based on race, religion, color, creed, age or national origin.
  • Endowments of any kind.
  • Conferences, seminars, trips or similar events.
  • Advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes.
  • Operating expenses of organizations supported by United Way other than through United Way.
  • Requests for loans or debt retirements.

Deadline: Mid-March and mid-August.

How to apply: Applicants should contact the Foundation at the phone number listed above to discuss their requests with Executive Director Soo Greiman. If appropriate, they should then visit the office to get an application form. Applications need to be submitted in written form, not exceeding 3-4 typed pages, outlining general information and answering key questions. They must be accompanied by the organization's 501(c)(3) tax exempt letter of qualification, an annual report with a listing of board leadership, budget and current programs. It is apparently acceptable to make an initial request for brochures and application forms via email at GuernseyFoundatn@aol.com. A personal visit is preferred.

Giving range: $500 – $75,000

Assets: $17,158,275 (year ending June 30, 2009)

Total giving: $605,752 (year ending June 30, 2009)
