Public Education Efforts to Increase Solid Organ Donation
Grant: Public Education Efforts to Increase Solid Organ Donation
Agency: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Division: Division of Transplantation; Healthcare Systems Bureau
Deadline: December 1, 2010
Description: Since 1999, the Division of Transplantation has supported 84 research projects to test specific strategies for their effectiveness in increasing public commitment to become organ donors. Funded projects support public education and outreach interventions by increasing the number and rate of individuals who choose to be donors. The specific purpose of this two year grant program is to promote broader implementation and evaluation of interventions that work to increase public commitment to solid organ donation. Applications for this program must propose a project to implement one of the following public outreach interventions: (1) replication of empirically validated interventions and (2) combined community outreach interventions.
Fit for public broadcasting: Category two is of particular interest to public broadcasting stations because it recognizes the link between behavior change and outreach strategies consisting of mass media and interactive grassroots programs. Stations can construct a project that contains both of these elements in a coordinated and well justified approach for increasing public commitment to organ donation. Media may be radio, television, print, or Internet-based and must be appropriate for reaching the population(s) targeted in the application. As an example, viral marketing such as Facebook and YouTube might be especially good venues for reaching youth. Identification and justification of each strategy as either grassroots or media is required.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include federally-designated organ procurement organizations and other nonprofit private or public entities. Eligible applicants that are public or nonprofit private entities may include state and local governments, Indian Tribal Governments, institutions of higher education, other nonprofit organizations and Tribal organizations. For-profit organizations, such as subcontractors or consortium members, may participate in a grant project but are not eligible to apply as the applicant institution.
Anticipated funding: Approximately $1,250,000 is expected to be available for the project year to fund 3-5 grantees. It is anticipated that the average award for each grant will be $200,000-$300,000 per year (direct and indirect costs). The total project period for applications submitted in response to this announcement may not exceed two years.
How to apply: Applicants must apply electronically through Grants.gov.
