Description: Founded in 1962 in Nevada by E.L. Cord (deceased). The Foundation has identified the following areas of interest:

  • Higher education.
  • Human services.
  • Secondary education.
  • Youth.

Sample grants:

  • $200,000 to Channel 5 Public Broadcasting, Reno, NV for operating support (2007).
  • $48,000 to KUNR-FM Public Radio, Reno, NV for classical music programming (2008).
  • $10,000 to Nevada Shakespeare Company, Reno, NV for production costs for film (2006).
  • $10,000 to Secret Witness Program for Reno, Sparks and Washoe County for Phase II of campaign for film, Crystal Darkness, a documentary about Methamphetamine addiction (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: Gifts to media appear to fit the Foundation's focus on education. The Foundation also appears to support the arts on media. The Foundation has made 16 grants for radio/television projects over the past five years, totaling more that $1 million.

Eligibility: Giving primarily in northern Nevada and the rural counties of Nevada. No support for religious organizations for sectarian purposes. No grants to individuals or for continuing support.

Deadline: None listed. The Board meets monthly.

How to apply: Initial approach should be by letter, requesting the guidelines brochure. All grants are restricted and are to be used only for the purposes set forth in the respective grant proposals. Administrative fees, grant writer fees and other indirect costs shall not be included in grant proposals. Application form not required. When preparing a proposal, applicants should submit the following:

  1. Copy of IRS Determination Letter.
  2. Brief history of organization and description of its mission.
  3. Copy of most recent annual report/audited financial statement/990.
  4. How project's results will be evaluated or measured.
  5. Listing of board of directors, trustees, officers and other key people and their affiliations.
  6. Detailed description of project and amount of funding requested.
  7. Copy of current year's organizational budget and/or project budget.
  8. Listing of additional sources and amount of support.

Giving range: The average gift for radio/television projects is approximately $68,500. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $500,000.
