INDIAN EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS PROGRAM

Indian Education Professional Development Grants Program

Grant: Indian Education Professional Development Grants Program
Agency: Department of Education (DOE)
Division: Office of Elementary and Secondary Education
Deadline: The deadline was March 1, 2013.

Description: Local educational agencies (LEAs) located on or near tribally controlled lands, which typically operate high need schools, face in attracting and retaining highly qualified teachers due to their remote location and other factors. The Indian Education Professional Development Grants Program can help address these difficulties by achieving three key goals:

  • Increase the number of qualified Indian individuals in professions that serve Indians.
  • Provide training to qualified Indian individuals to become teachers, administrators, teacher aides, social workers and ancillary educational personnel.
  • Improve the skills of qualified Indian individuals who serve in the education field.

These goals may be reached through a number of activities including, continuing education programs, symposia, workshops, conferences and direct financial report.

The Indian Education Professional Development Grants Program has three absolute priorities, which must be addressed by those entities submitting proposals. These priorities include:

  • Pre-service Training for Teachers covers projects that provide support and training to Indian individuals to complete a pre-service education program that enables these individuals to meet the requirements for full state certification or licensure as a teacher.
  • Pre-service Administrator Training provides training to Indian individuals to complete a master’s degree in education administration that is provided before the end of the award period and that allows participants to meet the requirements for state certification or licensure as an education administrator.
  • Enabling More Databased Decision-Making supports projects that provide the data that grantees need, and the capacity and training to use those data to inform professional development practices and approaches and to make informed decisions that increase program effectiveness.

Additionally, the Department of Education will award five competitive preference points to applications submitted by an Indian tribe, organization or institution of higher education. An extra five points was also be added to applications submitted by a consortium of eligible applicants.

Fit for Public Broadcasting: University licensees are encouraged to explore this opportunity. Those stations active in professional development and teacher training may be a good fit. Examples of previously funded projects include the training of tribal early childhood educators to meet national Head Start requirements, as well as professional development workshops to improve the awareness and effect of educators on the Native American population.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, including Indian institutions of higher education; state educational agencies (SEAs) or LEAs in consortium with an institution of higher education; Indian tribes or organizations in consortium with an institution of higher education; Department of the Interior or Bureau of Indian Education funded schools in consortium with an institution of higher education.

Anticipated Funding: It is anticipated that $3,347,789 will be made across 6 awards. The estimated range of awards is $300,000 to $400,000 for a project period of up to 48 months.

How to Apply: Applications for grants under this competition must be submitted electronically using Grants.gov. Online submission requires registration, a process that usually takes three to five business days but can take as long as four weeks. Be sure to visit Grants.gov and begin registering well in advance of the grant deadline.
