LEARN AND SERVE AMERICA HIGHER EDUCATION FY2010

Learn and Serve America Higher Education FY2010

Grant: Learn and Serve America Higher Education FY2010
Agency: Corporation for National and Community Service
Deadline: March 9, 2010

Description: The Corporation for National and Community Service is the nation's largest grantmaker that supports service and volunteering. Learn and Serve America grants support institutions of higher education that use innovative service-learning programs to meet the needs of local communities while encouraging lifelong civic engagement for student participants.

The Learn and Serve America Higher Education program funds two different types of grants:

1. Individual institution grants support innovative and potentially replicable service-learning programs at a single institution of higher education.

2. Consortia grants support a group of institutions of higher education that will be implementing similar service-learning programs.

Both types of grant applicants must demonstrate that they will participate in service-learning projects in partnership with community-based organizations, local government agencies, nonprofits, K-12 schools and/or student organizations.

Definition of service-learning:

Service-learning is an educational method that:

  • Is conducted in and meets the needs of a community.
  • Is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program.
  • Helps foster civic responsibility.
  • Is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled.
  • Provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.

Learn and Serve America will fund programs that focus on one of the following priorities:

  • Programs will include service-learning as a key component of teacher curricula and/or professional development provided to teachers.
  • Programs will integrate high-quality service-learning into the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Fit for public broadcasting: Stations should consider applying for consortia grants. Under this category, IHEs can partner with nonprofits to create STEM related classroom content. Of particular interest to the agency are programs that integrate STEM disciplines through activities such as community-partnership development, faculty training, and student-led service-learning opportunities.

Eligibility: Institutions of higher education (IHEs) or partnerships comprised of a single IHE and a public or nonprofit organization are eligible to apply.

Anticipated funding: Total estimated funding for this program is $7,300,000. Seven to nine institutions will receive individual institutional grant awards ranging from $85,000 to $200,000 each. An estimated seven to eleven consortia grants will be awarded and will range from $200,000 to $500,000 each.

How to apply: The Corporation for National and Community Service requires that all applicants submit their applications electronically utilizing its web-based application system, eGrants.
