Types of grants: Building/renovation, fellowships, general/operating support, in-kind gifts, scholarships. 

Description: The Foundation was established in 1992 by John F. McGee and Ruth B. McGee. It gives primarily for arts and science centers. Funding also for international journalism. The Foundation has particular interests in Vienna, Austria; South Africa and Thailand.

Sample grants:

  • $160,000 to Davidson College, Davidson, NC for International Journalism School Chair (2004).
  • $70,000 to International Center for Journalists, Washington, DC for Journalism School Fellowship (2004).
  • $30,000 to Indochina Media Memorial Foundation, Thailand for general operating support (2005). 

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation's media related giving appears to be focused on journalism. The Foundation has made five grants for media/journalism related projects over the past six years, totaling $325,000. 

Eligibility: Giving primarily in Charleston, WV; some support also for a journalism program in Austria and South Africa and Thailand.

Deadline(s): October 31.  

How to apply: Initial approach should be by letter of inquiry. Application form not required. The Board meets in November.

Giving range: The average gift for public media projects is approximately $65,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $800,000.
