Description: The Foundation supports education, as well as economic and community development initiatives, serving southeastern New Mexico (especially Lea County). The Foundation is most interested in supporting initiatives that have well-planned project outcomes. It prefers projects that are able to attract funding from additional sources; that have a reasonable expectation of becoming self-supporting; that improve or build upon local innovative leadership; and that have potential for significant local benefit. While the Foundation says that it prioritizes projects in southeastern New Mexico, it has a history of also supporting projects elsewhere throughout the region (Colorado, Texas) and nationally.

Sample grants:

• $250,000 to Lea County Museum for renovations (2008).
• $7,500 to Rocky Mountain Youth Corps in general operating support (2008).
• $5,000 to Public Broadcasting of Colorado in general operating support (2007).
• $5,000 to Community Radio for Northern Colorado in general operating support (2007 and again in 2008).
• $5,000 to the Taos County Film Commission for the Taos Mountain Film Festival (2008).
• $1,000 to University Radio Foundation for WFAE Public Radio (Charlotte, NC) (2007).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation is a fit for public media, especially for media projects that converge with Foundation interests in economic opportunity. The Foundation also has a strong interest in education and in the arts, both of which may be areas that could fit with public media initiatives.

Eligibility: The Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations and/or governmental entities. In awarding grants, the Foundation gives preference to southeastern New Mexico charitable organizations, but does not exclusively limit recipients to those areas. The Foundation does not generally support:

• Individuals.
• Ongoing operating support.
• Endowments.

How to apply: Letter of inquiry. Organizations are encouraged to phone the Foundation to discuss a proposed project in advance of submitting an inquiry.

Giving range: $1,000 to multi-million. Most grants are below $100,000.
