PROJECT VOICESCAPE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR PBS MEMBER STATIONS

Project VoiceScape Funding Opportunity for PBS Member Stations

Project VoiceScape Funding Opportunity from PBS and PBS Foundation
November 2, 2010

In order to engage middle- and high school-age youth in learning experiences using video, multimedia, digital art, web, animation and audio tools that enable young people to explore and comment on their world, the Adobe Foundation established the Adobe Youth Voices program. The Adobe Foundation awarded the PBS Foundation a grant to administer the program, and a portion of the grant funds are allocated for PBS activities.

In collaboration with the PBS Foundation, PBS is expanding the program by initiating Project VoiceScape, a project meant to leverage PBS Member Station resources to promote youth-created media in key markets. ProjectVoiceScape invites young, fresh voices into public media to share their views on community issues of importance to them. The media created by these young people will reside within the PBS Teachers website, which will provide educators with resources for managing youth media projects. Additionally, as part of Project VoiceScape, middle- and high school-age youth will be invited to respond to a national Call for Entries media project managed by POV. If selected, these young filmmakers will receive financial, artistic and technical support to complete and screen their films at an awards event in Washington, D.C.

PBS and PBS Foundation are soliciting PBS Member Stations to submit proposals for working with schools and/or youth-serving organizations to promote Project VoiceScape’s goal of encouraging youth-created media and to support the development of student projects suitable for submission to POV’s Call for Entries. PBS and PBS Foundation may select up to seven proposals.

Member Stations whose proposals are selected will receive:

  • A grant of up to $25,000.
  • Training in building support with Station-identified community and educational communities to promote youth-created media.
  • Technical assistance for one year.
  • A software donation of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements from Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Successful youth media programs will:

  • Engage and motivate underserved middle and high school age youth and ensure the youth participating in the program are between 13 and 18 years old.
  • Encourage youth to engage in deep critical thinking and produce media with personal and social impact.
  • Generate at least five high-quality multimedia projects per participating site that demonstrate the Adobe Youth Voices “Create With Purpose” criteria.

All proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m. EST, Friday, November 19, 2010. Proposals must be e-mailed to Donelle Blubaugh, Director of Education, PBS. PBS will award the contract for this project on or before Wednesday, November 24, 2010.

All questions regarding this program must be submitted via e-mail before 5:00 p.m. EST, Thursday, November 18, 2010.
