Description: The Foundation serves youth, supporting programs that specialize in education (programs that enhance the learning process for youth) and youth development (year-round mentoring or tutoring programs). The Foundation supports:

  • Education and youth development programs for children ages 8-18.
  • Year-round programs and projects that enhance learning for children.
  • Year-round transitional programs for youth to become productive adults.
  • Programs and projects that develop self-esteem and positive values while expanding opportunities.
  • Volunteer-based mentoring, tutoring programs and community service projects.

The Foundation runs the Tiger Woods Learning Center, an after-school campus designed to inspire career exploration, as well as a scholarship program for youth. The Foundation supports programs in the U.S. and in Thailand, China and Korea.

Sample grants:

  • $150,000 to Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League (2007).
  • $100,000 to Musical Instrument Museum (Phoenix, AZ) (2007).
  • $10,000 to DC College Success (2007).

Fit for public broadcasting: While there is no evidence of past media funding, there may be a fit for projects aimed directly at youth, especially those that help them explore career options. This could include, for example, a media training program.

Eligibility: Funding focuses on projects in California; Washington, DC; Florida; Maryland; Nevada; Texas; Pennsylvania and Virginia. Eligible organizations must:

  • Be tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) and not under 509a as a private foundation.
  • File a 990 Form with the IRS at the end of each fiscal year.
  • Have IRS-qualifying public support of over $100,000 from the preceding year.
  • Have been in existence for at least one year.
  • Have overall personnel costs less than 49% of its total functional expenses.
  • Have programmatic personnel costs less than 49% of its total programmatic budget.

The Foundation will not support:

  • Annual fund drives or fundraising events.
  • Capital projects: equipment, construction or renovation of buildings.
  • Endowment funds.
  • General operating support.
  • Individuals.
  • Organizations outside of our geographic focus.
  • Personnel: staff positions, staff benefits, salaries, stipends, etc.
  • Pilot programs: programs under a year old.
  • Programs that are not year-round.
  • Public schools.
  • Publications or audiovisual projects.
  • Research projects.
  • Travel or transportation.
  • Organizations using a fiscal sponsor.

Deadline: There are four grant cycles each year.

Giving range: $2,500 – $25,000
