Description: The Foundation was established in 1983 in North Carolina. The Foundation seeks to connect philanthropic resources with community needs, create opportunity for enlightened change and encourage philanthropy as a way of life. Most grants come from donor-advised funds.

Competitive grants are made through the Foundation's Community Grantmaking Program which supports Triangle-based nonprofits with annual budgets of less than $750,000 in the areas of Civic Engagement and Youth Leadership & Development.

In addition, competitive grants are available through:

  • Biogen Idec Foundation, a fund that makes small grants to schools and non-profit organizations to support science education.
  • Borchardt Fund, supporting international exchanges for educators in the field of technology.
  • GlaxoSmithKline Impact Awards, supporting community-based healthcare nonprofits that provide health care to the underserved.
  • Lenovo Hope Fund, supporting projects of significance to company employees and their spouses.

Sample grants:

  • $189,000 to National Public Radio, Washington, DC for continuing support (2009).
  • $86,100 to North Carolina Public Radio, Chapel Hill, NC (2006).
  • $72,000 to American Public Media, Saint Paul, MN (2009).
  • $66,768 to Western North Carolina Public Radio, Asheville, NC (2007).
  • $33,000 to University of North Carolina, Center for Public Television, Research Triangle Park, NC (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation appears to care about the importance of public media for the community's benefit. The Foundation has made 63 grants for radio/television projects over the past seven years, totaling more than $1.1 million. Note that most grants are made through donor-advised funds.

Eligibility: Giving from the Community Grantmaking Program is limited to Chatham, Durham, Orange, and Wake counties, NC. No grants for budget deficits.

Deadlines: February 15 and August 15

How to apply: Interested applicants should review the relevant guidelines. Guidelines for the Community Grantmaking Program are available online. Proposals must be submitted using the application form available online.

Giving range: The average gift for radio/television projects is approximately $17,500. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $1,216,478.
