CDC announces Sodium Reduction in Communities grant recipients
September 16, 2010

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has announced the recipients of their Sodium Reduction in Communities program. CDC awarded $1.9 million for sodium reduction initiatives in five communities and states including: New York City, Los Angeles County, Kansas (with Shawnee County), California (with Shasta County) and New York State (with Broome and Schenectady counties). These awards will support implementation of sodium reduction policy strategies, create healthier food environments and reduce sodium intake in the population.

The funding announcement for this program, issued on June 25, 2010, states that health departments that receive funding should work to create coalitions in their communities, in order to effectively implement their sodium reduction programs. Media experts are specifically mentioned and will be necessary for awardees. Public broadcasting stations that are located in the same communities as grant recipients and want to contribute their media expertise to a sodium reduction project should contact the local or state health department in the relevant community.
