NEA to host Creative Placemaking discussion
September 10, 2010
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is hosting a panel discussion called "Creative Placemaking" on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. The discussion will be webcast live from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m. EDT on the NEA website. Similar to the July webinar co-hosted by NEA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) about the Sustainable Communities grant program, this webcast will provide an opportunity for four panelists to discuss the role of the arts in creating livable, sustainable communities.
Many grant programs that have been created recently, including the Department of Education's Promise Neighborhoods program and the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Choice Neighborhoods and Sustainable Communities programs, stress the importance of communities that are both livable and sustainable. Creating livable communities involves incorporating ideas and innovations from a variety of different sectors; health, education and arts initiatives must be closely tied to transportation, housing and economic initiatives. This kind of comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to community revitalization is consistent with recent funding trends. Programs that require collaboration and innovative partnerships are in high demand. Applicants who think outside the box and across interest areas are rewarded. The "Creative Placemaking" discussion will provide insight about how arts organizations can be part of these comprehensive community building programs and examples of what roles they can play.
Moderated by Carol Coletta, CEO of CEOs for Cities, the discussion's panel will include:
- Richard Florida, author of The Great Reset and The Rise of the Creative Class.
- Tim Jones, president & CEO of Toronto Artscape.
- Rick Lowe, founder of Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas.
- Ann Markusen, professor and director of the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.
Participants will be able to submit questions to the panelists through the Twitter feed on the UStream page using the hashtag #NEAplace.
