September 21, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that 21 nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education will receive one-year Promise Neighborhoods planning grants. Recipients will create plans to provide services that improve the educational achievement and healthy development of young people. The full list of recipients, including links to their abstracts, is available here.

According to the U.S. Department of Education press release, the winning Promise Neighborhoods applications reflect strong partnerships among community-based organizations, service providers, schools and districts, institutions of higher education, cities and local leaders.

In his Fiscal Year 2011 budget, President Obama has requested $200 million to support implementation of Promise Neighborhood projects and $10 million for planning grants for new communities.
