U.S. Department of Education Announces Safe and Supportive Schools Recipients

U.S. Department of Education announces Safe and Supportive Schools recipients
October 5, 2010

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $38.8 million in Safe and Supportive Schools grants to 11 states. These grants will fund efforts to measure school safety and to help intervene in those schools with the greatest safety needs. The goal of the grants is to create and support safe and drug-free learning environments and to increase academic success for students in high-risk schools.

Funds were awarded to Departments of Education in 11 states and may be used to develop measurement systems to assess conditions for learning and to make this information publicly available. Using the data, grant recipients will work in collaboration with participating local educational agencies to improve the learning environment within schools facing the biggest challenges.

Public broadcasting stations located in these 11 states may be able to play a role in the projects funded by these grants and should contact their state departments of education to discuss collaboration.

The states that received funding include:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
