FEDERAL GRANT TREND ALERT: COLLEGE ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY

Federal Grant Trend Alert: College Access and Affordability

Grant Center Webinar
Thursday, June 28, 2012
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EDT

As the election draws nearer, college access and affordability is at the top of the list of critical education issues to be addressed nationwide. Many foundations are focused on increasing college access. College access and affordability is on the mind of many families across the country as their children graduate from high school. Public broadcasters are working to address high school graduation rates through the American Graduate initiative. This webinar addressed a number of hot topics that have been on the minds of politicians and families across the country. For example, on June 29, 2012, Congress reached a deal to freeze student loan interest rates for another year. Interest rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans were scheduled to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent beginning July 1, 2012. In addition, a variety of programs have been proposed to address college access and affordability. On this webinar, listeners heard from federal policy experts on the proposals that are out there and how public media can think strategically about college access and affordability going forward, as well as from KET on their efforts to make more students college-ready.

Speakers included:

  • Moderator, Meegan White, Project Director, Grant Center.
  • Alex Nock, Executive Vice President, Penn Hill Group.
  • Danica Petroshius, Principal, Penn Hill Group.
  • Tonya Crum, Director of Adult Education & Workforce Training, KET.

As mentioned on the call, be sure to access the Grant Center funding profiles for Upward Bound (part of TRIO) and GEAR UP for more details.
