HOUSTONPBS KEEPS TO ITS EDUCATIONAL ROOTS WITH THE HOUSTONPBS...

HoustonPBS Keeps To Its Educational Roots With The HoustonPBS Spelling Bee

HoustonPBS was the first educational station in the country, broadcasting on the air in May 1953. Keeping to its education roots, HoustonPBS is the home of the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee. Over 1,000 local schools from 42 counties compete in the Bee. The finals are broadcast live on Channel 8.

Winners from the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee represent the Houston region at the National Scripps Spelling Bee, the nation’s highest profile academic event. The Spelling Bee helps students improve spelling, increase vocabularies and develop correct English usage that will help them all of their lives. Bee participation also provides valuable experience in developing poise and sportsmanship, necessary skills for public speaking, performing arts and athletics.
