Iowa Public Television Presented Senator Tom Harkin with the APTS Champion of Public Broadcasting Award

On Wednesday, October 6, 2010, Iowa Public Television presented Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) with a APTS Champion of Public Broadcasting Award. This award is given to Members of Congress and other individuals who have had a tremendous impact on the ability of local public television stations to meet the most critical needs of the communities they serve.

Senator Harkin’s leadership on the Labor, Health and Human Services Subcommittee has been instrumental in providing invaluable funding for public broadcasting. He has been a champion of public television’s Rural Digital program, successfully defending the RUS Rural Digital program when it was under attack. Additionally, Senator Harkin has been a steadfast advocate of public television’s role in disease prevention and health care education, which is included in the current health care legislation.
