APTS Statement on NTIA Final Rule for Converter Box Coupon Program
Further Funding is Needed for Consumer Outreach
The Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) reacted today to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) announcement of the rules governing the converter box coupon program.
“We are pleased the NTIA is following the joint industry standard and that these rules include an electronic program guide,” said APTS President and CEO John Lawson. “We also think it’s wise to include a provision for a smart antenna that would ensure over-the-air households can receive the strongest signal possible.”
Lawson continued: “There is a great need for a comprehensive education and outreach campaign that directly reaches broadcast-dependent households where they live and work. This includes Americans living in many rural portions of the country, minorities, older Americans, lower-income families and persons with disabilities. Clearly the funding now available is inadequate to accomplish this.”
