APTS Applauds The House of Representatives For Rejecting An Attempt to Prohibit Federal Funding for NPR

WASHINGTON – November 18, 2010 –The Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) applauds the House of Representatives for overwhelmingly rejecting the attempt by Congressman Doug Lamborn to prohibit federal funding for NPR. The floor vote was part of a procedural maneuver related to the House’s consideration of the Rule for debate on H.R. 1722, the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010.

“APTS stands in solidarity with public radio stations across the country who provide an invaluable service to their local communities,” said APTS Interim President and CEO Lonna Thompson. “Without federal funding, public broadcasting stations, particularly those in rural areas, would be unable to continue to provide our local communities with the unparalleled news and information, and educational programming that we provide today.”

Thompson concluded: “The American people have said, time and again, that they value the federal investment in public broadcasting. This federal funding, which is $1.35 per person per year, has played an important role in assuring free and universal access to programs that inform and enrich the lives of millions of Americans in every corner of our country.”
