HUD Announces Bonus Points for Preferred Sustainability Status Communities

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announces bonus points for Preferred Sustainability Status Communities

On April 4, 2011, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that in FY 2011, it will award two bonus points to applicants that are working in the following three ways with communities that have received Preferred Sustainability Status under the HUD's FY 2010 Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program and/or the FY 2010 HUD-funded Challenge Grant Program. These communities are called Preferred Sustainability Status Communities.

Applicants that meet the following criteria will be eligible for an additional two bonus points:

  • The applicant is engaged in activities, that in consultation with the designated Point of Contact of the Preferred Sustainability Status Community, further the purposes of the Regional Planning Grant Program or the Challenge Grant Program.
  • The applicant's proposed activities either directly reflect the Livability Principles or will result in the delivery of services that are consistent with the goals of the Livability Principles.
  • The applicant has committed to maintain an on-going relationship with a Preferred Sustainability Status Community for purposes of being part of the planning and implementation processes in the designated area.

Public media stations can be valuable partners for HUD-funded projects. HUD emphasizes the importance of multi-faceted approaches to improving communities, and public media stations can be part of those strategies. Public media stations are valuable members of communities and can conribute significantly to a community's livability. Stations can determine if their community is a Preferred Sustainable Status community and discuss future project collaboration for HUD programs, if it is.
