COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO ENCOURAGE GAME SUBMISSIONS FOR THE PBS KIDS...

Community Outreach to Encourage Game Submissions for the PBS KIDS Prizes in the National STEM Video Game Challenge

Grant: Community Outreach to Encourage Game Submissions for the PBS KIDS Prizes in the National STEM Video Game Challenge
Agency: Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) - PBS KIDS
Deadline: November 18, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. EST

Description: CPB-PBS KIDS Ready To Learn is asking for proposals from public television stations who are interested in raising awareness of the 2012 National STEM Video Game Challenge. CPB-PBS KIDS Ready To Learn will award funding to local television stations that organize and promote at least one engagement event in their local community that encourages middle school students, high school students, college students and/or educators to create games for the PBS KIDS stream of this year's Challenge.

The 2012 National STEM Video Game Challenge, launched in partnership with Digital Promise, a new initiative from President Obama, Congress and the U.S. Department of Education, will award prizes to middle school students, high school students, college students and educators for coming up with the best STEM video games using a variety of free game-making platforms. The CPB-PBS KIDS Ready To Learn initiative is one of the sponsors of the 2012 National STEM Video Game Challenge. The Challenge will feature a PBS KIDS stream in which prizes will be awarded to middle school students, high school students, college students and educators who create the best video games to teach math concepts to children ages four to eight, using the Ready To Learn Math Framework.

In planning their awareness events, stations are encouraged to collaborate with local community partners who are affiliated with the Challenge's national outreach partners, including the Girl Scouts and Boys & Girls Clubs. Stations may also wish to convene events at libraries, youth centers, middle schools, high schools or college campuses. Events should utilize multimedia presentations, as well as engaging speakers, to inspire students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to design and submit math games targeted at children ages four to eight.

The end goals of these events are to:

  • Raise awareness among the target audience about the National STEM Video Game Challenge, specifically the PBS KIDS stream.
  • Demonstrate how simple it is to utilize the Ready To Learn Math Curriculum Framework to create math games for children ages four to eight.
  • Encourage students and educators to get started on their games now.

The promotional events hosted by local stations will take place between December 12, 2011, and February 29, 2012. Each station that hosts an event must submit a report about the event and promotional activities that includes numbers, photos and press clips by March 12, 2012.

Fit for public broadcasting: This opportunity is specifically for public television stations. Stations will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Ability to leverage strong community partnerships.
  • Proven experience in implementing community outreach events.
  • Familiarity with convening youth engagement events for secondary and college students, especially from low-income backgrounds.
  • Ability to meet timeline and budget requirements.
  • Strong and adequately resourced staff.
  • Total cost of project.

Eligibility: This opportunity is for local public television stations only.

Anticipated funding: Budgets can be for up to $3,000, and up to 20 stations will be selected.

How to apply: Proposals should be submitted in Rich Text or Microsoft Word and emailed to Shannon Case, Project Coordinator of Ready To Learn at PBS KIDS Interactive. The proposal review process is expected to be completed within five business days of the submission deadline, and a decision about awardees is expected by November 29, 2011.
