GARRETT A. MORGAN TECHNOLOGY AND TRANSPORTATION EDUCATION PROGRAM

Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program

Grant: Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program (GAMTTEP)
Agency: Department of Transportation (DOT)
Division: Federal Highway Administration
Deadline: The deadline for this program was February 17, 2012.

Description: The purpose of the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program (GAMTTEP) is to improve the preparation of students, particularly women and minorities, in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through curriculum development and other activities related to transportation education.

Based on partnerships among all sectors of the transportation enterprise, GAMTTEP serves as a catalyst to enhance transportation education among youth through internships, mentoring, career, and curriculum development and other transportation-related activities.

To fulfill their mission, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration is soliciting proposals to conduct programs to improve students’ STEM skills at the elementary and secondary school levels throughout the nation. These programs will also assist in building the capacity of educational agencies to plan, implement, sustain and evaluate transportation education activities in order to facilitate interest in the field of transportation and ultimately supply the skilled employees needed for the future transportation workforce.

Fit for Public Broadcasting: Partnerships are a critical part of this program. Educational institutions are strongly encouraged to partner not only with their state DOT, but also to partner with businesses, or other organizations to enhance the program’s impact in terms of geographic span, target audiences, skill sets, and other key elements. This provides an excellent opportunity for public broadcasting.

Promoting STEM education is a field where stations have and continue to be active. In 2011 for example, 12 stations were the recipient of the CPB funded “Community Outreach to Encourage Game Submissions for the PBS KIDS Prizes in the National STEM Video Game Challenge.” Winning stations are expected to host awareness events to inspire student’s participation in the STEM Video Game Challenge.

Eligibility: Eligible local educational agencies (LEAs) and state educational agencies (SEAs) must be the lead applicants here. Partnerships are strongly encouraged as part of this RFP, and must include a diverse group of professional, technical, community and minority-based organizations, disadvantaged business enterprises and others and should be strategically selected based on their knowledge, expertise or experience in advancing program goals.

Anticipated Funding: The Federal Highway Administration plans to award $1,800,000 across 18 awards; roughly $100,000 per grantee. All projects will be funded for one year without the possibility of automatic renewal.

How to Apply: All applications should be submitted electronically using Grants.gov. Online submission requires registration, a process that usually takes three to five business days but can take as long as four weeks. Be sure to visit Grants.gov and begin registering well in advance of the grant deadline.
