Type of foundation: Corporate

Types of grants: Project, capital (construction/renovation), scholarship

Description: US Airways contributes through three channels of giving, listed below. Organizations may apply for support from all of the funding channels if they meet the eligibility requirements – however, they must do so in a single request.

  • Corporate Giving Program: Invests in “leading nonprofit organizations designed to serve local community needs that effect sustainable change and result in healthy, vibrant communities.” The Corporate Giving Program makes monetary grants and in-kind donations. Specifically, grants focus on:
    • Advancing educational opportunities, especially related to literacy, science, technology, engineering and math education.
    • Strengthening communities by investing in programs that provide basic human needs to help encourage, sustain and develop economic self-reliance.
    • Supporting arts and culture, especially as a way to contribute to economic prosperity. US Airways’ strategy is to provide access to cultural resources that broaden artistic excellence by partnering with major arts and culture organizations.
  • US Airways Community Foundation: Focuses specifically on support for multi-year capital campaigns for 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations located in and providing services in the major metropolitan areas of Charlotte, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Applicant organizations should work in the areas of arts, education or human services. Only hard costs related to new building construction or major renovation/expansion of an existing facility are eligible for support.
  • US Airways Education Foundation: The Foundation makes grants to children’s programs and initiatives that address the educational needs of the disadvantaged and enhance academic achievement ($150,000 total in 2010). The Foundation also encourages employee involvement with nonprofit organizations working in the field of education. Finally, the Foundation awards scholarships to employee families.

Sample grants:

  • $150,000 contribution to Philabundance in Philadelphia to build a new community food center in Chester, Penn., one of the country's most barren food deserts (2012).
  • $100,000 to Philadelphia History Museum to enhance exhibitions of Philadelphia and national history (2010).
  • $100,000 to Phoenix Zoo for new facility to increase educational programming (2010).
  • $100,000 to Phoenix Theatre for new building to increase audiences and production performance (2010).
  • $75,000 to Junior Achievement of the National Capitol Area for new facility to educate students on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship (2010).
  • $25,000 to Ballet Arizona to renovate a 45,000-square-foot warehouse to allow artistic leadership, dancers, administration, staff and students to work together under one roof, creating streamlined operations (2012).
  • $20,000 to Charlotte Community Health Clinic for expansion of a pediatric clinic that will provide free health care to children (2010).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Corporate Giving program and the Community Foundation may both be fits for public media stations in the geographic target areas. In particular, stations doing work in the areas of literacy education, STEM education, and the arts would find a potential fit. Community Foundation grants may be a good fit for stations or national networks that are engaged in renovation or construction, as long as they are not university licensees (ineligible).

Eligibility: US Airways provides contributions to nonprofit organizations located and providing services in the major metropolitan areas of its hub and focus cities:

  • Charlotte (Mecklenburg County)
  • Philadelphia (Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties)
  • Phoenix (Maricopa County)
  • Washington, D.C. (Alexandria, Arlington, District of Columbia, Fairfax-Falls Church, Loudoun, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Prince William Counties).

These cities represent the communities served by the airline with the greatest number of flights and employees.
