Type of foundation: The Newman's Own Foundation is a private foundation governed by an independent Board of Directors. Newman's Own, Inc. is the company responsible for Newman's Own food products, and pays royalties to the Foundation.

Types of grants: Project, general support, challenge grants

Description: Newman's Own Foundation donates all net royalties and profits after taxes it receives from the sale of Newman's Own products to charities worldwide. The Foundation funds in the areas of health, education, environment, poverty, human services, community and economic development, and the arts. The Foundation gives nationally and around the world, but a review of the tax form shows that grants are concentrated in the Eastern United States.

Sample grants:

  • $150,000 to Connecticut Public Broadcasting for its Democracy Project.
  • $200,000 to Educational Broadcast Corporation c/o WLIW for BBC World News distribution.
  • $100,000 to Educational Broadcast Corporation Thirteen WNET for the Thirteen NewsHour Challenge.
  • $70,000 to WNYC ($65,000 in program support and $5,000 in general).
  • $60,000 to WSHU/Fairfield, CT in a challenge grant.
  • $25,000 to Independent Feature Project (New York) for Accelerating America.
  • $10,000 to Educational Broadcast Corporation for WLIW operating expenses.

Fit for public broadcasting: This is a good fit for public media, both for general and project support. The Foundation only accepts proposals by invitation, so interested organizations would need to find a way to facilitate an introduction/recommendation.

Eligibility: The Foundation does not observe geographical restrictions or strict programmatic restrictions. It is most interested in addressing current needs in society and supporting positive impact for succeeding generations.

The Foundation does not make grants for:

  • Business purposes, religious activities, or lobbying/political organizations.
  • Annual funds.
  • Endowments.
  • Special events.
  • Building campaigns.

Deadline: Proposals are accepted by invitation only.

How to apply: Proposals are accepted by invitation only. The Foundation draws upon a team of advisors to inform grantmaking efforts and recommend organizations for consideration. 

Giving range: $10,000 – $500,000. Most grants are $100,000 or below.
