Description: Overbrook is a family foundation started in 1948 by Frank and Helen Altschul. Frank Altschul was an investment banker. The Foundation makes grants in the areas of Environment and Human Rights. It regularly funds media as a means of advancing its goal of progressive change.

- $50,000 to WNYC Radio for On the Media (2008 and 2009).
- $50,000 to National Public Radio for coverage of environment and human rights issues (2008 and 2009).
- $45,000 (2009) to Grist in general operating support and $35,000 (2008) for Going Further: Grist 2.0 and a Hub of Environmental News, Community and Action.
- $40,000 (2009) and $60,000 (2008) to New America Media.
- $35,000 to Thirteen/WNET for Wide Angle educational outreach package (2008 and 2009).
Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has a solid history of support for public media. Projects must fit into the areas of environment and/or human rights. Multi-platform projects are attractive to the Foundation.
Eligibility: The Foundation does not make grants to individuals and rarely for endowments, building campaigns, direct services, deficit financing or religious purposes. Grants are not made for debt reduction.

How to apply: In response to the economic crisis, the Foundation has shifted its grantmaking to focus entirely on current grantees and its own collaborative partnerships.
Giving range: Typically up to $200,000 (most grants are below $100,000).
