Description: Founded in 1997, the Starbucks Foundation supports communities where Starbucks does business. Since then, it has donated $30+ million. Grants appear to be made primarily made through the Starbucks Shared Planet Youth Action Grants Program. This program makes grants to support young people (ages 6-24, with preference to age 12+) who are leading positive change. Specifically, it supports projects that:
- Provide training to young people to develop necessary skills and knowledge to incubate ideas, identify and assess community needs, create a plan of action, execute a plan and evaluate outcomes against goals.
- Build ongoing leadership capacity and long-term engagement of young people.
- Communicate young people’s success stories through various media (print, video, web based).
Starbucks is currently not accepting opportunities for national or local partnerships or sponsorships, or for product or in-kind requests.
Sample grants: Grants are made for one-year terms only.
- Street-Level Youth Media (Chicago) for the Female Action Voicing Change (FAVC) program which targets low-income, female media artists between the ages 14-19, who are interested in developing their leadership skills. FAVC peer mentors will conduct media production workshops for youth at Chicago Hopes shelters to teach them skills in video and audio production. Following the workshops, Street-Level instructors and the FAVC peer mentors will collaborate with the Chicago Hopes youth to produce media projects that address their concerns and tell their stories (2009).
- The Talented Youth (Seattle, WA) for NFFTY Earth which promotes the power of film to bring positive changes to the environment, support social justice, and encourage peace. NFFTY Earth helps young filmmakers find their voice and get their message out to as wide an audience as possible (2009).
- Starbucks supports Radio Arte, a Latino-owned, bilingual, youth-driven public radio station that works to advance the voices of our multi-layered society (amount and year of grant not found).
Fit for public broadcasting: The best fit with the Foundation’s current giving priorities is likely in the area of youth media.
Eligibility: U.S. applicants must be tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Approximately 10 percent of each grant budget should be allocated to engage Starbucks employees and others in community service in support of the grantee organization.
The Foundation will not support:
- Universities and academic research institutions.
- Conferences or symposia.
- Events, tables, exhibitions, performances.
- Capital campaigns (including use of grant funds for exclusive purchase of technology and materials).
